Stages of Change:

  • ContemplationDefinition: At this stage, individuals are aware that they have a problem and are considering doing something to change it, but they have not yet committed to taking action. They weigh the pros and cons of their behavior and the potential changes.
  • Preparation/DeterminationDefinition: Individuals in the preparation stage are planning to take action within a short time (e.g., the next month). They may begin to take small steps toward change and are committed to making changes.
  • ActionDefinition: This stage involves active modification of behavior, experiences, or environment to overcome their problems. Individuals put their plan into action and make significant efforts to change their behavior.
  • MaintenanceDefinition: The maintenance stage is characterized by sustained change. Individuals work to prevent relapse and consolidate the gains they have made. This stage requires continuous commitment and may last for months or years.
  • Relapse (Sometimes considered a stage)Definition: Relapse is not always included as a formal stage but is recognized as a part of the process. It involves a return to previous behaviors after a period of change. It serves as an opportunity for learning and growth, informing the individual's strategies for future attempts at change.
